Do Not Ramble

While to some this may be a seemingly trite post, a number of entrepreneurs that I have met with could benefit from this topic. 

In previous posts I have talked about the various ways in which you can stay focused on the objective of your first meeting.  However, one way in which entrepreneurs frequently get off track is by trying to squeeze as much information as they can into the conversation with the hope that some of the details will hook the VC. 

It's important that you don't ramble in any of your interactions with a VC - it's a bad idea.  VCs know that you are rambling because of one or both of the reasons listed above.  As mentioned before, VCs don't need to hear every detail of your plan to make a decision.  When VCs think an entrepreneur is trying to share their entire business plan in a phone call or first meeting it makes the entrepreneur appear naive and inexperienced. 

In the first meeting, focus on explaining the high-level characteristics of your plan and address specific questions posed by a VC.  Extraneous information can take the conversation down a new tangent, clutter the big picture and ultimately prevent VCs from achieving their objective of sanity checking your high-level assumptions.  Keep it simple - too much irrelevant information can result in you not being asked to another meeting.
