Evolve

VCs use the due diligence process for more than collecting information and learning about your company.

VCs want to back entrepreneurs that can solve problems by evolving when necessary. Fortunately for VCs there is an easy way for them to test this. Nobody has exactly the right plan from the beginning and startups face model-shaping challenges all the time. As a result, VCs will often have the chance to watch an entrepreneur respond to issues during the diligence period. How entrepreneurs handle these issues will help VCs decide whether they believe that the management team is prepared to take the company through the startup phase (if not further).

Furthermore, VCs will often enter the due diligence phase with awareness of an issue that management has yet to address. In these situations VCs take the opportunity to make suggestions and watch how entrepreneurs respond to feedback. Doing so provides a great test of how the entrepreneur will work with the VCs after investment. If you are a team player who takes feedback to heart you will do well.

Being aware of this dynamic during the due diligence phase can help you prove to VCs that you are going to be a compatible partner in the future.
